SAINTE-MARIE ISLAND

DESTINATION
DIVING AND KITESURFING

70 km long, 5 km wide: a pin dropped in the Indian Ocean. From above, Sainte-Marie Island, off the east coast of Madagascar, holds great promise. White sand, lagoon, coconut trees, reefs and authentic villages.

Once you set foot on the island, it delivers on every promise. But what about beneath the ocean's surface? Luciano and Julius, Bora Dive's Malagasy diving instructors, sum it up in a single word: diversity. Walls, coral heads, reef plateaus, sandy areas, limestone rocks, seagrass beds, wrecks — the biotopes are remarkably varied.

Each of the 20 dive sites has its own unique features. Rays, groupers, triggerfish, reef sharks, turtles, moray eels, jacks, snappers. For the more patient divers: nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, leaf fish, seahorses…

With a (sizeable!) cherry on top: between June and September, dive while listening to the song of humpback whales. An absolute must, even though the best visibility is found between October and January — the ideal season to explore the Malagasy islands.

ACCOMMODATION

Les villas de Vohilava

Les Villas de Vohilava and its restaurant La Varangue are located just a few kilometres north of Bora Dive. The wooden villas are spacious (120 to 200 m²) and fully equipped, offering the perfect private setting for groups of friends or a family of divers!

A dedicated housekeeper takes care of everything, including introducing you to the local cuisine! Next to the villas, the bar/restaurant, with its large terrace and sun loungers, is one of the liveliest spots in the south of the island.

Henry, the owner, is a former commercial diver with COMEX, and has been living on Sainte-Marie for 25 years.

Princesse Bora Lodge & Spa

Just 500 metres from the airport, nestled in a lush coconut grove along the lagoon, 21 natural-material villas welcome you for a glamorous and authentic diving getaway.

The infinity pool, facing the restaurant, provides the ideal setting for your discover dives. When it comes to dining and drinks, treat yourself to a variety of experiences: the Beach Grill, the Kintana Bar, or the India Papa Bar, perched at the end of the jetty — the perfect spot to watch the sunset.

OUR COMMITMENTS

Diving means entering a fragile world. On an island, that responsibility runs even deeper. Our dive and kitesurf center is committed to practicing and promoting ocean-friendly diving and activities that respect the reefs and the island communities that depend on them. Every dive is an opportunity to understand, respect, and protect the ocean. We believe that sustainable island tourism is both possible and necessary.

Bora Dive & Kite collaborates with scientists from the PRISM project to collect data on marine fauna and benthic habitats. The goal: to track and understand how the island's marine biodiversity is evolving over time. This long-term monitoring informs protective measures for sensitive sites and species.
